ABOUT BR'ER POSSUM, HIS CREATIONS, HIS EMPLOYEE THE FIBREARTIST AND SOME FRIENDS AND SPECIAL IDEAS

Created in the early 1990s by retired academic Ken Johnson, BR'ER POSSUM CREATIONS carrys on the European tradition of Gypsy Basketry which moved into Appalachia in the 19th Century and subsequenly migrated westward into Ozarkia in the 20th Century.

Johnson exhibits and demonstates regionally under sponsorship of AMERICAN COUNTRY SHOWS INC. of Texas. He does occasional art-in-the-park shows in Missouri and surrounding area including Ohio, Kansas, Tennessee, Nebraska, Iowa, and Kentucky.  He believes firmly in the therapeutic value of involvement in some artcraft process for many people regardless of the sophistication of the medium chosen.

Principal fibres used by Johnson are cane, reed, jute, poplar, red oak, seagrass, and wild woodvine which he harvests personally. Occasionally he uses leather strips and macrame cord, and stripped bark. Smoking of baskets is often employed to reduce color contrast and to create an antique  surface effect.

Johnson's fibreart has been recognized by Wichita State University and by the University of Missouri-Columbia. He offers limited basketry instruction, and selectively takes on broom making apprenticeships. In the past he has volunteered as an art therapist.

Brooms and baskets depicted herein are available for purchase via the email links provided including direct email to Br'er Possum Creations and via other pages that are linked to this site.

Free cultural exhibitions are also available and should be negotiated by email and telephone followup.

The enterprise derives its name from the Fibreartist's pet cat named Possum. She appears in several of the pictures to follow.
